Daniel was born in 1877.  Daniel's father was Andrew DeGroat and his mother was Emma F. Sigler (DeGroat).  His paternal grandparents were John DeGroat and Margurette Perry (DeGroat). He had seven brothers and a sister, named William, James, John, Judine / Judson ?, Clarence, Stanley, Paul and Minnie.  He was the oldest of the nine children.
