William was born in October 1879.  William's father was Andrew DeGroat and his mother was Emma F. Sigler (DeGroat).  His paternal grandparents were John DeGroat and Margurette Perry (DeGroat). He had seven brothers and a sister, named Daniel, James, John, Judine / Judson ?, Clarence, Stanley, Paul and Minnie.  He was the second oldest of the nine children.
