Dorothy I was born in 1911.  Dorothy I's father was John Chester DeGroat and her mother was Ida Elizabeth Utter (DeGroat).  Her paternal grandparents were Peter DeGroat and Jane (DeGroat); her maternal grandparents were Daniel Utter and Catherine Welsh (Utter). She had two brothers named Peter D and Charles W.
