Peter was born in July 1849. Peter's father was John DeGroat and his mother was Margurette Perry (DeGroat). He had three brothers and five sisters, named Andrew, Nelson, John, Mary, Martha, Margaret, Susan and Mary.  He was the oldest of the nine children.
