  David D. Smith of Philadelphia, PA died suddenly on Friday, January 12, 2001 at Jeanes Hospital. He was 57 years old. He was born in Philadelphia, PA., the son of the late Howard Smith and the late Flora Victoria (nee Hullevad) Smith.
  
  He is the beloved husband of Joanne Smith (nee - Vincent); the father of Joan Monaco and her husband Richard Monaco and Peggy Huttick and her husband Robert Huttick; the grandfather of Diana Monaco, Katie Monaco, Ashley Huttick and Chris Huttick; the son of Sophia Smith; the brother of Robert Smith and Deborah Sasinowski.
  
  He was born and raised in Philadelphia and graduated from Northeast High School. He served in the United States Navy from 1963 until 1965 and in the Naval Reserves until 1968. He was a firefighter in the Philadelphia Fire Department from 1965 until his retirement on May 27, 1992 as a lieutenant. He was an instructor at the Fire Training Academy from 1985 until 1992. He was a member of the Firefighters Local 22 and was an assistant steward at the Philadelphia Fire Officers Union.
  
  Relatives and friends were invited to his Funeral Service Tuesday, January 16, 2001 10:00 A.M. at The Wetzel and Son Funeral Home, 6902 Rising Sun Avenue, Philadelphia. Friends were invited to call Monday 6:00 to9:00 P.M. and Tuesday 9:00 to 10:00 A.M. at The Wetzel and Son Funeral Home. The Interment at Whitemarsh Memorial Park, 1169 Limekiln Pike, Prospectville followed the services.
  
  In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to the Hero Scholarship Fund, 1617 J.F.K. Boulevard, Suite 933, Philadelphia, Pa. 19103.
